The Greenmarket Youth Education Project connects thousands of New York City schoolchildren in grades K-12 with Greenmarkets and our farmers and chefs each year. Through fun, interactive learning experiences like School Tours at market, Meet Your Farmer classroom visits, Seed-to-Plate cooking classes and On The Farm field trips we help children gain an understanding of local agriculture and the importance of eating fresh, seasonal foods--for their bodies, their environment and their communities.
Greenmarket School Tours introduce the concepts of seasonality, local food, and sustainable agriculture to over 4500 school children each year. Tour curricula are grade-level appropriate and every tour involves a scavenger hunt, a tasting component, and take-home materials. School children discover the diverse varieties and delicious flavors of farm fresh food and explore the lively community created by a farmers market. Tours may be scheduled at any of our 50 markets. Our Union Square location hosts an Education Station tent Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with peer to peer programming, cooking demonstrations and interactive displays.
Greenmarket is partnering with children’s culinary education programs, local farms, other non-profits, teachers and universities to develop additional youth programming and standards-based curricula.
